West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the Rath Yatra in Digha on June 27. She will personally pull the rope of Lord Jagannath’s chariot to mark the official start of the procession. This event marks the first time such a grand Rath Yatra is being organized in Digha, modeled after the traditional festival held in Puri.
Before the chariot departs, Mamata Banerjee will perform a ritual of cleaning Lord Jagannath’s path with a golden broom, a tradition observed during the Rath Yatra in Puri. The golden broom, made from the Chief Minister’s personal funds, was donated to ISKCON for use in this ceremony. Three separate chariots have been prepared for Lord Jagannath, Balram, and Subhadra, which are decorated inside the temple premises in Digha.
Following the Puri tradition, flags will be hoisted on all three chariots. The procession will carry the deities to the ‘Masibari,’ an ancient Jagannath temple located near the police station in Old Digha. The deities will rest at the Masibari for seven days during the ‘Ultarath’ festival, consistent with customary Rath Yatra practices.
